Setting the highest certification standards for psychiatrists and neurologists since 1934

Faculty Innovation in Education Award

The ABPN Faculty Innovation in Education Award is intended to support the development of innovative education and/or evaluation projects related to the mission of the ABPN, which is to promote and assess the competence of psychiatrists and neurologists to provide high quality care in an equitable and inclusive manner to diverse populations. Such projects will therefore promote effective residency/fellowship training or lifelong learning of practicing psychiatrists and neurologists. Preference will be given to projects that have the potential for use in more than one site and to first-time applicants and applicants who are at a junior or mid-faculty level.

Each year, up to two psychiatry and two neurology grant awardees will be selected.  The duration of the projects will normally be for two years with a maximum amount of funding of $60,000 per year or $120,000 total.  This amount is intended to cover salary, fringe benefits, and other costs.  No indirect costs will be covered.

The submission deadline for 2025-2026 awards is August 20, 2024.

Applicants must:

  • be certified by the ABPN, including active participation in continuing certification
  • comply with the ABPN’s conflict of interest policies and procedures
  • hold a faculty appointment in a Psychiatry or Neurology department (or its equivalent) at a U.S. LCME-accredited medical school, or, if without a faculty position, submit a department chair-validated offer letter with their application that confirms the appointment will start before January 1, 2025, coinciding with the award’s inception

While any projects relevant to the education and/or assessment of psychiatrists and/or neurologists will be considered, the ABPN is particularly interested in the following areas:

  • Topics related to ABPN’s strategic plan in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), such as promoting gender, racial, and ethnic equity, mentorship, fostering an inclusive learning environment, or providing leadership development opportunities
  • Innovative approaches in implementing clinical skills evaluations
  • Innovative approaches to the development and assessment of professional competence
  • Strategies to promote lifelong learning
  • Innovative curricula for continuing certification, including teaching about CC in residency
  • Strategies to promote public education about and input into Board certification
  • Strategies to promote physician resilience and to prevent burnout
  • Development, testing, or implementation of competency-based medical education (CBME)
  • Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing education or assessment
