Dr. Cheong is Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, FL and Chief, Psychiatry Consult-Liaison Service at the Malcom Randall Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Gainesville FL.

She is certified by the ABPN in Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry and participates in continuing certification. As an ABPN Director, Dr. Cheong serves on the Psychiatry Council, and is Chair and Vice Chair of several ABPN committees.

Dr. Cheong serves on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Board of Directors and is also a liaison to the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP). Dr. Cheong specializes in geriatric psychiatry, undergraduate and graduate medical education and training, and academic leadership development and mentorship. She has formerly served as a member of the ACGME Psychiatry Residency Review Committee. Dr. Cheong has served on numerous committees over the past 25 years within the Association for Academic Psychiatry, American Psychiatric Association (APA) and AAGP. She has served as Chair of the APA Scientific Program Committee in 2009 and 2013 as well as a past Chair of the APA Council on Aging. Within the VA, Dr. Cheong has been actively involved in the national VHA Office of Academic Affiliations and has served as an Associate Chief of Staff/Education at the North Florida/South Georgia VHS and Assistant Chief, Psychiatry for Tennessee Valley Healthcare System from 2014-2017. She has been an examination writer for various committees at the ABPN for over 15 years.
