Information About Initial Certification Exams

All candidates will need to complete and submit an online application in ABPN Physician Folios in order to qualify and apply for an examination. Each application will be reviewed by the credentials department. Candidates become diplomates after passing their examination. Diplomates will then begin the process of maintenance of certification. Review the ABPN Initial Certification Exam Process Flyer for more information.

Examinations are administered at Pearson VUE test centers across the United States and Canada. Testing outside the United States and Canada is available in some locations. Please contact the ABPN at questions@abpn.com for more information.

Candidates will have the opportunity to select their own test date, time and location based on the availability with Pearson. See our Exam Schedule to learn the exam dates and application deadlines.

Diplomates who will be nursing at the time of their examination may request a private space for lactating purposes. The request must be emailed to questions@abpn.com no less than 60 days prior to the examination. The diplomate must submit a physician’s letter documenting their need to express breast milk. Not all test centers have a private space for this purpose. If space does exist, it is subject to availability. Test takers must be prepared to use the building’s restroom or may choose to travel some distance to a location with available space. Refrigeration is not provided. Diplomates may bring a cooler if they choose to store breast milk. Children and visitors are not allowed in testing centers for any reason.
