ABPN Extends Board Eligibility Policy and Virtual Clinical Skills Evaluations Through June 30, 2022
Due to ongoing issues with in-person clinical experiences at residency training programs, the ABPN has decided to extend its current board eligibility policy through June 30, 2022. Program Directors can be assured that the Board will continue to follow their lead with respect to whether or not a particular resident has completed the specific training needed for graduation. The ABPN will continue to be flexible with respect to senior residents as long as the Program Director agrees.

In addition, through June 30, 2022, the ABPN will continue to accept virtual CSEs completed via a remote conferencing platform such as Zoom for all psychiatry and neurology residents as part of the credentialing requirements to sit for an ABPN initial certification exam.

Programs can enter resident information, including CSEs, into the ABPN preCERT® Credentialing System. We ask that Program Directors please use the preCERT notes section to designate virtual CSEs.

See the original board eligibility and virtual clinical skills evaluations announcements for more information. If you have additional questions, please contact our credentials department at credentials@abpn.org.

  • Later in 2021, APA will provide access to 10 select sessions from the APA Annual Meeting, including an ABPN CC/MOC program update by ABPN Psychiatry Directors, Drs. Joan Anzia and Robert Boland. Sessions will be accessible in the APA Learning Center at http://education.psychiatry.org.

  • The APA is offering access to PsychPRO, a qualified clinical data registry for all behavioral mental health providers. At this time, registration is complimentary for ABPN diplomates who are also APA members. Non-APA members are welcome to join at the physician rate.

The ABPN will also collaborate again in 2021 with the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), through a grant from the ABPN, to provide diplomates with complimentary access to AAN programming.

  • Current AAN members will receive a separate email from the AAN with additional details. AAN members should log in to the Online Learning Center with their AAN ID or associated email address to access education programs. March 18, 2020

From ABPN President and CEO Larry Faulkner, MD
ABPN senior leadership has been actively monitoring the events and circumstances surrounding the spread of COVID-19 and the impact on our candidates, diplomates, and volunteers. After several large medical institutions announced domestic travel bans and acknowledging the uncertainty of an evolving level of public concern, extremely difficult decisions had to be made that resulted in the postponement and cancellation of some planned events.

We appreciate your patience during this chaotic time. We will continue to carefully evaluate the situation as it evolves.

As of today:

      1. We have cancelled all in-house meetings until at least the end of 2020 and are preparing to conduct those meetings by conference calls and webinars. (updated August 4, 2020)
      2. We have decided to reschedule our Crucial Issues Forum on Supporting and Promoting Women in Academic Psychiatry and Neurology to 2021.
      3. We have cancelled all travel to off-site meetings through the end of 2020 and will participate in crucial activities through conference calls and webinars. (updated August 4, 2020)
      4. We have arranged for our staff to work from home. We ask that all questions you may have be directed to questions@abpn.org.  An ABPN representative will get back to you within one business day.
      5. We have prepared communications to candidates and diplomates reassuring them that they will not be penalized for any delays or cancellations that take place for the Spring Continuing Certification examinations.
      6. We have posted a notice to Program Directors and Program Administrators regarding board eligibility and COVID-19.

We want everyone to be aware that their certification status will not be negatively impacted by this healthcare crisis.  We will continue to post updates on this page.

We are committed to supporting you during these challenging times and thank you for all that you do to care for your patients and for each other.

Respectfully,

Larry R. Faulkner, MD
President and CEO
