Application Materials for Pain Medicine
Candidates can download application materials for their on-line examination and view other important information.

Each year the ABPN provides print publications for each examination that will be offered in the following year. These Information for Applicants publications contain our rules and regulations, requirements for admissions to examinations, examination procedures, specific training requirements, and content descriptions for the examination.

Fifth Edition (DSM-5)
With the publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) will adapt its examination specifications and content to conform to DSM-5 classifications and diagnostic criteria for its computer-delivered certification and maintenance of certification examinations according to the following timeline:

Examinations administered in 2013 and 2014
Will continue to use DSM-IV-TR

Examinations administered in 2015 and 2016
Will use classifications and diagnostic criteria that have not changed from DSM-IV-TR to DSM-5

Examinations administered in 2017
Will use DSM-5 classifications and diagnostic criteria

Oral examinations will continue to conform to DSM-IV-TR.

Please note:
A. ABPN Diplomates must apply online and submit an application through ABPN Physician Folios. Required documents should be mailed separately. Required documents include copies of certificates of training or letters of verification from training directors and the identification number of the residency program.
B. Diplomates from a board other than ABPN, ABA or the ABPMR must initiate the application process by completing an online form at http://www.abpn.com/application-pain-cert. After completing the online form, you will receive login information within 2 to 3 business days to allow you to complete the application process.
C. Diplomates of the ABA or the ABPMR must apply through their respective boards.
