| Candidates are those in the field of hospice and palliative medicine, who are seeking ABPN Board Certification. All candidates will need to complete and submit an application in order to qualify for an examination. Each application will be reviewed by the credentials department. Candidates become diplomates after passing their examination. Diplomates will then begin the process of maintenance of certification. Candidates in Hospice and Palliative Medicine
Initial Certification
The initial certification in the subspecialty of hospice and palliative medicine examination is a 240-item, multiple-choice examination, consisting of four, 2 hour modules of 60 questions each; plus a 20 minute break between module 1 and 2, a 60 minute break between module 2 and 3, and another 20 minute break between module 3 and 4. It is scheduled for a maximum amount of time of ten hours and fifty minutes including an optional tutorial of 30 minutes, instructions and Pledge of Honesty of 10 minutes and an optional survey of 10 minutes at the end of the examination.
