| Candidates are those in the field of forensic psychiatry, who are seeking ABPN Board Certification. All candidates will need to complete and submit an application in order to qualify for an examination. Each application will be reviewed by the credentials department. Candidates become diplomates after passing their examination. Diplomates will then begin the process of maintenance of certification. Candidates in Forensic Psychiatry
Initial Certification
The initial certification in the subspecialty of forensic psychiatry examination is a 200-item, multiple-choice, four hour examination administered via computer at Pearson VUE testing centers. The Board advises applicants, in writing, of the results of the examination.
Maintenance of Certification
The maintenance of certification examination is a 120-item, multiple-choice examination administered via computer for three hours. Candidate knowledge is assessed in legal regulation of psychiatry, civil issues, criminal issues, death penalty, corrections/correctional health care, legal systems/basic law, children/families, and special issues in forensic psychiatry.
